28. Cardinal Blase J. Cupich

Cardinal Blase Joseph Cupich was born on March 19, 1949, in Omaha, Nebraska. He has served as Archbishop of Chicago since 2014 and was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope Francis in 2016. Throughout his ministry, he has consistently affirmed the right of the Jewish people to a secure homeland in the State of Israel, and following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks, he publicly condemned the violence and expressed solidarity with the Jewish community.

Cardinal Cupich has also been a firm opponent of antisemitism. He has repeatedly stated that “one cannot be a good Catholic and an antisemite,” echoing the teaching of recent popes. He has also urged Catholics to actively push back against antisemitic rhetoric and actions, emphasizing the enduring covenant between God and the Jewish people and rejecting theological claims that Christianity has replaced Judaism. Cardinal Cupich maintains that Israel’s right to exist in security is non-negotiable.
